Join the Flat Holm team for a special day at Brean Down Fort, celebrating the shared history of Flat Holm, Steep Holm, and Brean Down – three remarkable sites that once formed a unified coastal defence network during the Victorian era and World War II.
What to expect
Discover the unique heritage, wildlife, and stories of the Bristol Channel Islands through engaging activities, including:
- Interactive stalls exploring the history of Flat Holm and Steep Holm
- Insights into the earliest radio messages ever sent over water, transmitted from Lavernock Point to Flat Holm and Brean Down
- Guided walks exploring the natural and military history of the area
- Nature activities for children – perfect for families!
- A special radio message from Lavernock Point
- A chance to see Morse code in action and send messages over the same route as Marconi
Come along for a fascinating journey into the past and enjoy a day of exploration, learning, and outdoor fun!
Practical information
🚻 Toilets: Located next to the National Trust café. Please note there are no facilities on the down or at the fort.
🚗 Parking: The National Trust car park is free to members and £6 per day for non-members. There are two alternative car parks nearby. Please only park in designated spaces.
Please note – from the car park, it is approximately a 4km round walk to the event site itself at the Fort. There are some steep climbs. Brean Down is exposed to wind and weather, so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for conditions on the day.
