Water Safety Code
The Cardiff Harbour Authority Water Safety Code is designed to promote safety in the Bay and its rivers. We want you to enjoy your experience around the water’s edge, so please follow the code.
The main principles are:
- Swimming is NOT permitted in the Bay or rivers (due to its dangerous depth and currents)
- If you see anyone in difficulty, dial 999 and ask for the emergency services
- Do not throw rubbish or stones in the water
- Always wear boots or shoes on the riverbanks and on the foreshore
‘Design a Bay banner’ school competition
Jumping and swimming in the Cardiff Bay water are not allowed due to the risk of drowning.
To help Cardiff Harbour Authority spread this vital message, we ran a competition for schoolchildren to design a poster about water safety in the Bay.
We would like to thank everyone who took part – we were really impressed with the high standard of designs, and truly appreciate the time that pupils and teachers spent engaging with the topic.

All 60 winning banners will be displayed across Cardiff Bay Barrage, the Barrage Walkway and the Graving Docks. Over a million people visit the Barrage every year, so the artworks will be famous!
