CURRENT CHA PROJECTS

Pont y Werin

The proposed cycle and footbridge over the River Ely will improve sustainable access for commuters, residents and tourists travelling between Cardiff and Penarth. The link will also provide a sustainable transport route to and from the International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay which will become an increasingly popular destination as the Ice Rink, Swimming pool and other leisure facilities are due to open over the next few years. The 140 metre bridge will also link up to cycle routes throughout the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff.

The Connect2 UK-wide project aims to improve local travel for everyday journeys in 79 communities by competing for the Big Lottery Fund’s: The People’s £50 Million contest. If they are successful Pont y Werin will receive £1.15m towards it becoming a reality.

Voting for Sustrans Connect2 and Pont y Werin has now closed.  The winner of the Big Lottery Fund’s: The People’s £50 Million contest is due to be announced on Wednesday December 12.

Barrage Café

Plans are in place to develop a permanent Café on the Barrage embankment. The proposed café will offer both internal and external seating areas and being situated on the edge of the Bay, will offer spectacular views of the Inner Harbour and the Bristol Channel.

Canoe Slalom Centre

This centre will be developed at the International Sports Village site in Cardiff Bay. The layout of the course will extend from the land out into the river Ely and will use variable capacity pumps and moveable obstructions to make it suitable for all ability levels. The centre will be built to Olympic standard, and will be used for a wide variety of water activities including white-water rafting.

Walk of Fame

Located in Roald Dahl Plass A National Walk of Fame is being developed that will pay tribute to famous Welsh men and women. Chosen by the people of Wales, their names will be inlaid in  individually carved stone plaques.  Annual induction events are expected to create significant public and media interest, as the famous personalities are inducted into the 'Welsh National Walk of Fame'.

Bay Edge Walkway

The completion of the Bay Edge Walkway will provide a continuous 13 km route for both pedestrians and cyclists around the waterfront of Cardiff Bay.  It will also inter-connect with the popular River Taff Trail and the River Ely Trail which is under construction.  A significant proportion of the route is already in place.  The main sections still be completed include the length between the Barrage and the Norwegian Church, the section within the International Sports Village and the bridge across the River Ely.

Graving Docks Project

These docks were constructed between 1853 and the early 1900’s for the building and repairing of ships in the dry using “graving” (a sealant) to seal the hulls.  This project aims to introduce land and water activities, including regular visiting heritage ships, the installation of additional pontoons and potential partnership opportunities with the private sector.

Water Transport Project

The aspiration of Cardiff is to achieve a fully integrated public transport network.  The Council transport policy aims to reduce traffic impact on the roads of Cardiff, particularly commuter traffic.
