The construction of the Cardiff Barrage created a new 200 Hectare freshwater lake with associated environmental challenges.

The Barrage was constructed under provisions within the Cardiff Bay Barrage Act 1993 which prescribed a range of statutory duties and responsibilities upon the operator of the Bay. Amongst these are requirements with respect to achieving and maintaining water quality standards and the promotion of wildlife and conservation.

The Harbour Authority Environment team manages all water quality and environmental issues relating to Cardiff Bay.

An extensive water quality monitoring programme is used to measure achievement of the water quality standards. A pro-active Environmental Operations Programme of work ensures that environmental issues are identified at an early stage and effectively managed. The development and implementation of a Wildlife and Conservation Strategy as well as Harbour Authority in-house projects provides a framework for discharging the various statutory requirements to protect and enhance the natural environment.
