There are six YSI
Endeco continuous monitoring stations with water quality measurement instruments deployed within
the Bay and the Rivers
Taff and Ely (see map). These stations are solar powered
which together with storage batteries allows continuous operation and
measurement of dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, conductivity and
turbidity.
The collected data is telemetered via radio or GSM
cellphone to a
computer in the Harbour Authority office. The data is analysed daily
by Harbour Authority staff and is also subject to scrutiny by the
Environment Agency which has on-line access to the computer. Water
quality measurements are made at 1 metre depth at all buoys and at 1
metre above the bed of the bay at three of the buoys. The Water
Quality Team ensure the continual operation, calibration and
maintenance of these monitoring stations.
