The construction of the Cardiff Bay Barrage created a freshwater lake
with unique water quality and associated groundwater management
challenges. For example, the Cardiff Bay Barrage Acts requirement to
maintain dissolved oxygen levels above 5mg/l in all places and at all
times is not known to exist anywhere else in the world.
Similarly, the groundwater monitoring system installed and the
database containing groundwater level, river, bay and sea level and
rainfall data is the largest urban system of its kind in the world.
Permanent groundwater control systems have also been installed. Also, the
undertaking of condition surveys of over 20,000 properties between
November 2001 and November 2002 is believed to be the largest project
of its type undertaken.
The
Cardiff Harbour
Authoritys commitment to environmental management is demonstrated by
it becoming the first Harbour Authority to attain ISO 14001
(Environmental Management Systems) accreditation in March 2004.
Further information regarding the
Harbour Authoritys
environmental management policies and initiatives may be accessed under
Groundwater,
Groundwater Protection, Water Quality,
and Conservation
pages. The latter also provides information on the Harbour Authoritys
renewable energy projects and sustainability strategy amongst others.
