Cardiff Harbour Authority has various statutory
requirements placed upon it to protect and enhance the natural
environment. Section 14 of the Cardiff Bay Barrage Act (1993) states:
|
When managing
the inland bay Cardiff Harbour Authority shall have regard to the desirability of developing and
conserving flora and fauna. |
|
Cardiff
Harbour
Authority shall consult with the Countryside Council for
Wales to seek their views as to ways in which the inland bay may be managed
so as to develop and conserve flora and fauna. |
To achieve this, Cardiff Harbour Authority is committed to
protect the animals and plants within the Bay whilst carrying out all
their activities. This was especially important during the extensive
construction associated with the development of
Cardiff Bay.
For nature conservation to be effectively managed, it is
essential to know what species are present and how the various
communities are developing. To achieve this, Cardiff Harbour Authority
has implemented a range of monitoring programmes.
Specific conservation projects carried out within the Bay
include:
|
Cardiff Bay Wetlands
Reserve |
|
Restoration of
a fish nursery area on the River Taff below the PDR Bridge |
|
Re-instatement
of bank side habitat following construction of the International
Sports Village |
|
Planting along
the river channel and Bay edges to provide protection for coarse
fish within the Bay. |
