BIRDS
Mallard Since 1989, the British Trust for Ornithology have monitored the numbers of wader birds (e.g. Dunlin, Redshank) located in and around Cardiff Bay.  The purpose of this monitoring programme is to establish the impact of impoundment of Cardiff Bay upon wader birds.

This programme is now complete. To access a summary of the Trust's report - click here.

The British Trust for Ornithology has prepared a report which provides a summary of the numbers and status of water birds using wetland habitats within Cardiff Bay since impoundment.

To access a full version of the report for the period 1999 to 2003 Click here (pages 1-20 - pdf 574kb), Click Here (pages 21-38 - pdf 955kb).

The British Trust for Ornithology have also been monitoring wader birds using the Bay and adjacent foreshore since 1989. They have produced a report for each winter period since commencement. The monitoring is due to be completed during the winter period of 2002/03. An interpretive report on the impact of the impoundment upon wader birds that formerly used the bay will be prepared.

In compensation for the loss of the Cardiff Bay habitat, a 1000 acre wetland reserve was constructed on the Gwent Levels.  The idea of the scheme , which was completed in 1999, is to provide habitats for nationally rare species of birds.  Further information can be obtained from the Countryside Council for Wales who now operate and manage the reserve.
