VHF usage

VHF usage Whilst in the Bay all vessels should monitor VHF channels 16 and 18.

VHF Changes

Coast Radio Stations no longer accept link calls on VHF, so your mobile telephone will be even more useful at sea now. However, Coastguard Stations have taken over the handling of ‘PAN PAN MEDICO’ medical urgency calls, and can put you through to a Doctor for medical advice at sea. They have also now taken over the broadcast of Marine Safety Information including navigation warnings, weather warnings and weather forecasts.

EMERGENCIES
Emergency Contacts
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) co-ordinate all search and rescue within the Bay and at sea. If you observe a life threatening situation, dial 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
The Patrol Boat
The Harbour Authority patrol boat 'Harbour 3' patrols the bay during daylight hours giving advice and assistance to users of Cardiff Bay. Boat owners are asked to co-operate with patrol boat crews in promoting safe navigation within the bay. The patrol frequently assist the emergency services in search and rescue operations, although they are not normally able to offer a ‘breakdown’ service.

Cardiff Harbour Authority Survey 1

If you require the services of a patrol boat, please call the Harbourmaster on (029) 2087 79 00, or the patrol boat on 07879 483 426. If you need assistance out of working hours please contact Barrage Control on (029) 2070 0234 or VHF Radio Channel 18 to see if help is available.

HM Coastguard Yacht and Boat Safety Scheme (CG 66)
To aid with rescue and recovery, boat owners can enter their details with the Coastguard Maritime Rescue Centre by completing a CG 66 postcard. Although this does not relieve skippers of responsibility for their vessels and crew, it would assist in the event of a search becoming necessary. The service is free and leaflets with CG 66 cards are available from Marinas, Yacht Clubs, or the Coastguard.
